Top Reason To Stays

Cycling

When thinking of cycling in Central Otago, we naturally think first of the Otago Central Rail Trail, which begins (or ends) in Middlemarch. However, there are numerous other exciting cycle trips you can do, both in getting to the Middlemarch area as well as while staying here.

Otago Central Rail Trail

The Otago Central Rail Trail is one of New Zealand’s great bike rides. The trail follows the old Otago Central Railway corridor from Middlemarch to Clyde through the Maniototo plain and Ida Valley. No traffic, no city noise, three tunnels and a number of bridges and stone cuttings. The Trail takes approximately three days and follows through some of Otago’s best and least populated country. The views are outstanding and the night sky, unpolluted by street lights, gives a fresh intensity to stars, satellites, meteors and planets. Geographically, this area was formed by the floor of a prehistoric sea, and you still get that awed sense of walking in an ancient cathedral when you step out into this landscape.

Cycling tours to and around Middlemarch

There are many local rides beyond the rail trail. Some of these are easy and loops for a variety of riders. Their links also have useful comments and pictures:

The “Middlemarch Explorer”: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=3945483
It’s easy and is a loop. There are no problems with DOC about riding around Sutton Slat Lake.

Here is another longer loop with goes on Hartfield road and the Rail Trail: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=3917660

This is a very easy return trip on the rail trail which is perfect for a family ride:

And here’s a challenging ride to the top of the Rock and Pillar but technically not too hard: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=3917676

Ever thought of cycling from Dunedin to Middlemarch? Here is an account from a “cycle purist”: Dunedin to Middlemarch by Bike (80km). An elevation map is provided.

An alternative suggestion is to take the Taieri Gorge Train to Pukerangi and either overnight there or carry on to Middlemarch or Hyde. (Please note; this is not running at present).

Excellent information about the practicalities of cycling to Middlemarch from Dunedin as well as the Otago Central Rail is available in this article.

In this article, Exploring the Strath Taieri by bike, by John Fridd describes two different cycle routes from Dunedin to Middlemarch. An excellent map and slide show explain what you are likely to experience. Suggestions include cycling from Dunedin to Hindon and from there catching the Taieri Gorge Train to Pukerangi or Middlemarch. Return trip suggestions take you via Nenthorn and Ramrock Road to Waikouait, then Karitane and on to Dunedin, or cycle via Hyde and Macraes Flat to Palmerston and on to Dunedin. The article was published in the Otago Daily Times.

For the even more physically fit, here is the map of a trip from the Old Dunstan Road to Summit Rock on the Rock and Pillar range. An elevation chart accompanies the map.

Sutton Salt Lake

Sutton Salt Lake is located on the southern edge of the Strath Taieri valley, nestled amongst tors, grassland and tussock. It is New Zealand’s only salt or saline lake and with no water flowing in or out, it is entirely filled by rainwater. The lake evaporates in dry periods.

  • Extract of very readable scientific paper on “Water and sediment chemistry of Sutton Salt Lake, East Otago, New Zealand” by D Craw & S Beckett, 2004.

Now a scenic reserve of about 150 hectares administered by DOC, Sutton Salt Lake contains wildlife adapted to the salty conditions.

The most interesting aspect of the area are the schist tors scattered across the landscape. These fascinating shapes are the result of erosion, the harder pieces of schist resisting weathering.

Arts & Crafts

The Arches

The result of a “Sculpture in Public Places” competition won by Otago Polytechnic students Rebecca South and Jesse Stevens. They said about their project: “After visiting Middlemarch we felt the fundamental issues that needed to be represented in this work were the landscape, the environment and the people.” And so the use of schist was the medium chosen for this evocative sculpture, located near the beginning of the Otago Central Raul Trail.

Rock ‘n’ Pillar Replicas

Rock ‘n’ Pillar Replicas are small handcrafted stone buildings based on actual buildings erected in the Otago area in the 1800s. The scarceness of timber made it necessary for the pioneers to find alternative building materials. Local rock was cheap and readily available. This rock, schist, could easily be split into blocks ideal for building. The permanency of these buildings is evident by the numbers still standing today, a lot still being in use.

We ship anywhere in the world. Available at local craft outlets.

Gardens

Grocott Community Garden

This organic garden is located at the Railway Precinct. It has multiple purposes one of which is to demonstrate how to produce food by organic methods. Participants learn such things as making compost, liquid plant food and mulching to preserve moisture and restrict weed growth. The produce is distributed locally with any excess donated to food banks.
The project is the brainchild of Patricia Bosshard-Browne, who called on the heft and ingenuity of community members. The project was also generously supported by businesses here and in Dunedin.
Practically, seventeen ton of soil from Cottesbrook Station as well as manure was used to fill the raised beds.

Using heavy mulching discourages weeds and reduces the amount of water required. .

We meet at the garden between 10 am to12 pm on Wednesdays. Lean over the fence and have a chat, or come inside and do some leisurely gardening.

We do not start seriously planting until the beginning of Oct, even then it can be too early as we sometimes can find ourselves covered in snow or with minus 6 deg frosts.

The garden proudly houses a great “Little Red Tool Shed” made and donated by the Blokes Shed of Mosgiel.

The garden is fittingly named after Mr Grocott, who was the first stationmaster in Middlemarch in the 1890’s. The old station master’s house is next door.
